Advanced Cell Technology, Inc., a leader in the field of regenerative medicine, announced today the dosing of the third patient in its Phase I/II trial for dry age-related macular degeneration (dry AMD) using retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells derived from human embryonic stem cells.
Oxidative stress is the cause of many serious diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's, arteriosclerosis and diabetes. It occurs when the body is exposed to excessive amounts of electrically charged, aggressive oxygen compounds. These are normally produced during breathing and other metabolic processes, but also in the case of ongoing stress, exposure to UV light or X-rays. If the oxidative stress is too high, it overwhelms the body's natural defences. The aggressive oxygen compounds destroy genetic material, resulting in what are referred to as harmful 8-oxo-guanine base mutations in the DNA.
The latest scientific discoveries in children's health will be presented in Denver April 30-May 3, as part of the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies. This year's gathering is a joint meeting with the Asian Society for Pediatric Research, and more than 6,500 leaders in academic pediatrics from around the world are expected to attend the meeting at the Colorado Convention Center.
