The University of Virginia Health System is piloting a new program that uses its EpicCare electronic medical record to speed patients' access to specialists.
Motivated clinicians and an Internet connection combined with computers and e-mail access have the power to transform pediatric cancer treatment in the most remote corners of earth, according to a St. Jude investigator writing in a recent issue of The Lancet Oncology.
According to an Australian Melanoma Family study, use of sunbeds to get a tan can increase the risk of developing melanoma by 41 per cent. The study looked into the effects of sunbeds on 18-39-year-olds and found that 23 per cent of participants who had melanoma reported using these machines.
A leading group of Alzheimer's researchers contends that, as biomarkers to detect signals of the disease improve at providing clinically meaningful information, researchers will need guidance on how to constructively disclose test results and track how disclosure impacts both patients and the data collected in research studies.
MIT neuroscientists have shown that an enzyme overproduced in the brains of Alzheimer's patients creates a blockade that shuts off genes necessary to form new memories. Furthermore, by inhibiting that enzyme in mice, the researchers were able to reverse Alzheimer's symptoms.
