A previously unknown link between the immune system and the death of motor neurons in Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, has been discovered by scientists at the CHUM Research Centre and the University of Montreal. The finding paves the way to a whole new approach for finding a drug that can cure or at least slow the progression of such neurodegenerative diseases as ALS, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases.
Ascent Healthcare Solutions, a leader in delivering healthcare resource sustainability, today announced that its hospital partners saved an astounding $82 million in unnecessary supply chain costs in the first six months of 2009 with Ascent's reprocessing and remanufacturing programs.
It may very well be that models used for the design of new drugs have to be regarded as impractical. This is the sobering though important conclusion of the work of two Leiden University scientists published in Science this week.
In the current issue of Cardiovascular Innovations and Applications (Special Issue on Women's Cardiovascular Health, Volume 3, Number 4, 2019, Guest Editor Gladys P. Velarde) pp. 363-373(11); DOI: https://doi.org/10.15212/CVIA.2017.0079 Khadeeja Esmail and Dominick J. Angiolillo from the University of Florida Medical School, Gainesville, FL, USA review antiplatelet therapy considerations in women.
Dr Min said: "Smoking is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Studies have identified that quitting smoking can reduce heart attacks and death but have not examined the relationship of this salutary effect on the presence and severity of coronary artery disease. Our study aimed to find out what impact stopping smoking had on the risk of cardiovascular events, death and the severity of CAD."
