World Customs Organization Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya on Thursday signed a declaration vowing his group's commitment to crack down on the counterfeit drug industry, PBS NewsHour's "The Rundown" blog reports. The piece examines the growing threat of counterfeit medications worldwide and efforts to clamp down on the distribution of such drugs (Miller, 6/24).
Though the global economic crisis has slowed the pace of efforts to reduce poverty in developing countries, the countries remain "on track" to meet the Millennium Development Goal target to halve extreme poverty by 2015, according to a report released Friday by the World Bank and IMF, Agence France-Presse reports (4/26).
Certain types of early-onset epilepsy are caused by previously unknown mutations of a potassium channel gene, KCNA2. The mutations disrupt the electrical balance in the brain in two ways.
