A new report shows that the percentage of girls who experience a major depressive episode in the past year triples between the ages of 12 and 15 (from 5.1 percent to 15.2 percent respectively). The report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) also shows that an annual average of 1.4 million adolescent girls age 12 to 17 experienced a major depressive episode in the past year.
Avanir Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has entered into a settlement agreement with Actavis South Atlantic LLC and Actavis, Inc. (collectively, "Actavis") to resolve pending patent litigation in response to Actavis' abbreviated new drug application seeking approval to market generic versions of Avanir's NUEDEXTA (dextromethorphan hydrobromide/quinidine sulfate) capsules.

The results of a new study revealed that treatment for women with HER2-positive breast cancer – an aggressive form of the disease which is diagnosed in 10,000 British women each year – slowed the progression of tumors by 40 per cent compared with conventional drugs. Tests on 137 women showed that the new therapy – called T-DM1 – which combines the drug Herceptin with an antibody drug, instead of with standard chemotherapy, appeared to stop the cancer "in its tracks".
