"What will the day be like when we finally defeat AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria?" Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group, asks in the Huffington Post's "The Big Push" blog.
In this post on the PLoS "Speaking of Medicine" blog, Madhukar Pai, a professor and tuberculosis (TB) researcher based at McGill University, co-chair of the Stop TB Partnership's New Diagnostics Working Group, and a consultant to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, describes a recent conference on TB diagnostics at St. John's Research Institute in Bangalore, India, that aimed "to stimulate industry interest and investments in TB innovations."
Using nanotechnology, scientists from UCLA and Northwestern University have developed a localized and controlled drug delivery method that is invisible to the immune system, a discovery that could provide newer and more effective treatments for cancer and other diseases.
Severely depressed elderly Victorians are benefiting from electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) - and, contrary to popular belief, the treatment is not damaging their memories, a Monash University study has found.
