Why do other countries spend less on health care and yet achieve near-universal coverage and often better outcomes than the United States? This question has come up repeatedly during the health reform debate, and yet the answers still aren't clear. How much of a factor is the health care system? Population differences? These are some of the questions addressed in Health Care in World Cities, a new book co-authored by Hastings Center scholar Michael Gusmano and published by Johns Hopkins University Press.
Urate-lowering therapy alone may not directly reduce the risk of kidney disease in those with hyperuricemia. However, according to a study presented at the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting in San Diego, working to lower serum uric acid based on the 2012 American College of Rheumatology Guidelines for Management of Gout has a positive effect.
The latest International Diabetes Federation (IDF) data reveals that over 285 million people worldwide now live with diabetes and this number will explode to 435 million by 2030. This staggering figure does not capture the toll the disease takes on the individual. Unlike other diseases, people with diabetes are responsible for 95% of their own care and many are doing so without the proper skills and knowledge to do so.
