South Australian Coroner Mark Johns ruled against parents sleeping with their babies as he was conducting an inquest into the deaths of five babies in 2007 and 2008 who had slept with a parent or grandparent.
UK law now requires mental health nurses to testify at patient review hearings if asked. This is important given such nurses now have more powers, such as the ability to detain people under the Mental Health Act and to determine their leave of absence from mental health units. However, this study shows most nurses at one hospital had not received any specific training to give evidence or prepare reports for such hearings.
Every 10 seconds a report is made concerning a child being abused. Child abuse can lead to life-long physical, emotional and psychological conditions. Each year in the U.S., more than 1,600 children die from abuse or neglect. April is National Child Abuse Awareness Month and Loyola University Health System is working with physicians, nurses, parents and communities to help bring awareness to this preventable childhood danger.
