Statins did not protect patients against colorectal adenomas, which are benign precursors of colorectal cancer, according to results of a secondary analysis of the Adenoma Prevention with Celecoxib trial. In a population at high-risk for developing these lesions, results of this analysis suggested statin use may increase the risk of developing benign colorectal tumors.
It's already known that a person's social environment can affect their health, with those who are socially isolated - that is, lonely suffering from higher mortality than people who are not.
Scientists have known for some time that these individuals carry a genetic mutation (known as CCR5-Ä32) that prevents the virus from entering the cells of the immune system but have been unable to account for the high levels of the gene in Scandinavia and relatively low levels in areas bordering the Mediterranean.
Clinics and hospitals are increasingly switching to electronic medical records as a federal push to spread the technology sweeps across the nation.
