It takes a lot to make a memory. New proteins have to be synthesized, neuron structures altered. While some of these memory-building mechanisms are known, many are not. Some recent studies have indicated that a unique group of molecules called microRNAs, known to control production of proteins in cells, may play a far more important role in memory formation than previously thought.
Researchers at Emory University School of Medicine have identified a set of genes that act in muscles to modulate aging and resistance to stress in fruit flies.
Nursing students who had placements in UK hospitals observed that ward environments were not physically suited to caring for dementia patients and qualified nurses often felt out of their depth when trying to treat such patients. Nurses sometimes 'saw the disease, not the patient', students reported. As a result patients were not always treated with dignity and there were challenges to basic care such as nutrition.
Elsevier, the leading global publisher of scientific, technical, and medical information products and services, announced today the acquisition of Fisterra.com, an award winning, widely used e-clinical reference solution in Spain.
