The Regenstrief Institute Inc., an international leader in electronic medical records and health information exchange research, development and operations, is licensing its Indiana Network for Patient Care and DOCS4DOCS clinical results delivery software to a subsidiary of the Indiana Health Information Exchange. This licensing agreement represents the single most significant transfer of discovery out of an academic medical informatics research setting to a commercial enterprise in the history of Indiana's health information technology sector and the national evolution of health information exchange.
About a decade ago, Medicaid programs were struggling to keep up with skyrocketing prescription drug costs. Between 1997 and 2002, drug spending in the program for low-income Americans grew by about 20 percent annually. ... Medicaid directors began looking for ways to tamp down on those costs. One of the most popular policies was something called "prior authorization" for a new wave of more expensive, anti-psychotic drugs ,... These policies, in a sense, worked: they helped rein in how much Medicaid spent filling prescriptions. EarlySense announced today that its EverOn Touch system has been cleared for marketing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA clearance covers several key additions to the traditional EverOn contact-free patient supervision system value proposition. For the first time, the EverOn system includes an online display that alerts medical staff regarding a patient's motion level and verifies patient turns as indicated by nurses. Identifying low patient movement and then turning patients methodically are key elements in the prevention of pressure ulcers, the most costly patient safety risk in U.S. hospitals.
