The first results from the POISE biopsy sub-study have today confirmed that long-term treatment with obeticholic acid leads to the reversal or stabilization of fibrosis/cirrhosis in patients with primary biliary cholangitis who have had an incomplete response to ursodeoxycholic acid.
Smoking both tobacco and marijuana increases the risk of respiratory symptoms and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), found a study in CMAJ.
"The Obama administration has selected eight countries to serve as learning labs for a new global health strategy aimed in part at reducing maternal and child deaths and combatting preventable diseases," the Wall Street Journal reports. "The move is among the first steps in the administration's" roll-out of the Global Health Initiative and "comes amid mounting concerns about how much support President Barack Obama will win from Congress for a proposed 9% increase in global health spending for fiscal 2011," the newspaper reports.
A new study of obese people suggests that changes in their brains' reward regions make them more prone to overeating, and that women and men exhibit different brain activity related to overeating.
Bladder inflammation has been linked to incontinence and cystitis, a condition that results in recurring bladder infections and pain in the surrounding pelvic region; it is a common infection in women and causes both pain and embarrassment to many.
