Health algorithm biased against black individuals finds study

A new study has revealed that a commonly and widely used healthcare algorithm may be biased against blacks and may be denying them of vital medical treatment. The study titled, "Dissecting racial bias in an algorithm used to manage the health of populations," was published this week in the latest issue of the journal Science.

Early molecular signs of high-risk pregnancy revealed

Masimo, the inventor of Pulse CO-Oximetry™ and Measure-Through Motion and Low Perfusion pulse oximetry, announced today that it retained $30,064,684 from a payment from Covidien, following the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals' October 2009 affirmance of a Federal District Court decision that Tyco Healthcare, now Covidien, violated the antitrust laws through anticompetitive business practices related to the sale of its pulse oximetry products.

Patients at greatest risk of post-PCI bleeding least likely to receive bleeding avoidance strategies

In a study that included data from more than 1.5 million patients, use of vascular closure devices and the anticoagulant bivalirudin were associated with significantly lower bleeding rates for patients following a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI; procedures such as balloon angioplasty or stent placement used to open narrowed coronary arteries), according to a study in the June 2 issue of JAMA. The researchers also found that patients who may benefit most from these treatments, those at greatest risk of bleeding, were least likely to receive them.
