According to US Department of Health and Human Services, compared with urban Americans, rural residents have higher poverty rates, have fewer doctors, hospitals, and other health resources, and face more difficulty getting to health services. Beginning 2014, when health care reform becomes effective, an estimated 2.4 million Californians will be newly-eligible for Medi-Cal.
Eating disorders (ED) such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating disorder affect approximately 5-10% of the general population, but the biological mechanisms involved are unknown. Researchers at Inserm Unit 1073, "Nutrition, inflammation and dysfunction of the gut-brain axis" (Inserm/University of Rouen) have demonstrated the involvement of a protein produced by some intestinal bacteria that may be the source of these disorders.
A group of researchers from the Fat Institute (CSIC) and the University of Seville have confirmed that some wild plants have a high nutritional value. The scientists have found that several species of lupins from the mountains of Andalusia have a protein content similar to that of other cultivated legumes, as they publish in the online version of the Food Chemistry magazine.
Interventional Spine, Inc. today announced the FDA clearance of their next generation Opticage Expandable Interbody Fusion Device. The next generation system is an enhanced version of the original Opticage system that was introduced in 2012.
Johnson & Johnson's Tibotec Pharmaceuticals unit on Thursday announced it had granted multiple licenses to generic drug manufacturers "to provide copies of [the experimental HIV/AIDS drug rilpivirine hydrochloride] TMC278 in sub-Saharan Africa, India and parts of Asia if it's approved by regulators," Bloomberg Businessweek reports.
