In this report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, released ahead of the GAVI Alliance pledging conference, authors Lisa Carty, J. Stephen Morrison, Margaret Reeves, and Amanda Glassman write, "Its many achievements notwithstanding, GAVI still needs a strategic approach in the coming years if it is to deepen its impact, get the maximum returns from its implementing partners, attract expanded donor support, and leverage greater commitments from recipient partner governments".
Today marks an important step for ELIXIR, Europe's emerging research infrastructure for life-science information, as five countries plus the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to catalyse the implementation and construction of ELIXIR.
Heme oxygenase-1 is essential for the growth of blood vessels in the placenta and in establishing blood flow in the umbilical cord. Too little HO-1 can lead to a restriction in the growth of the fetus and even in fetal death and miscarriage. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Medical Gas Research has shown that low dose carbon monoxide therapy is able to restore placental function and prevent fetal death in mice, without any detrimental effects.
The robust jaws and formidable teeth of some of our ancestors and ape cousins may suggest that humans are wimps when it comes to producing a powerful bite: but a new study has found the opposite is true, with major implications for our understanding of diet in ancestral humans.
