NYU Langone Medical Center researchers have developed a powerful new method to investigate the discrete steps necessary to turn on individual genes and examine how the process goes wrong in cancer and other diseases. The finding, based on seven years of research and described in the April 9 issue of Molecular Cell, allows scientists to investigate the unfolding of DNA, a process required for gene activation.
Spinal cord injury (SCI) can be a catastrophic event for the individual. Traditionally, such injuries were viewed as permanent, irreversible neurological dysfunction, but over time research has shown some neuroplastic capability of the injured adult mammalian spinal cord. However, spontaneous functional recovery post-SCI is very modest.
Inflammation and cell stress play important roles in the death of insulin-secreting cells and are major factors in diabetes. Cell stress also plays a role in Wolfram syndrome, a rare, genetic disorder that afflicts children with many symptoms, including juvenile-onset diabetes.
Designed to improve today's routine radiographic procedures, the RadPRO® product line from Virtual Imaging, Inc., a Canon U.S.A., Inc. subsidiary, will feature Canon's current line of advanced portable and general digital radiography (DR) systems at the 2009 Radiological Society of North America Annual Meeting (RSNA 2009), taking place at McCormick Place, November 29 – December 3.
