Before the onset of winter and the annual flu outbreak, doctors around the UK will be preparing for a much more worrying influenza epidemic this season.
NanoVibronix, a medical device company, announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510K clearance to market PainShield MD, a diathermy device used to treat pain. PainShield is the first hands-free, patch-based diathermy device, thus allowing for an entirely new dimension in ultrasound treatment of pain and soft tissue healing. The PainShield consists of a disposable patch connected to a portable reusable driver and generates ultrasound waves to the desired area of the body.
Before the whooping-cough vaccine came into widespread use in the 1940s, about 9,000 American children died from the infection each year. Today, thanks to the vaccine's efficacy, reported cases of whooping cough have dramatically declined and fatalities have dropped to up to 20 children each year.
There is a very good reason mothers often carry their crying babies, pacing the floor, to help them calm down. New research published in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on April 18 shows that infants experience an automatic calming reaction upon being carried, whether they are mouse or human babies.

At least that's how children from around the world will likely view it as they get set for four consecutive days of yoga, April 22-25, 2010. It's all part of Children Helping Children, a worldwide, coordinated effort to bring relief to Haiti's children.
