Companies' health costs will rise about 9 percent on average next year as a result of the aging workforce, growing medical costs and health law-related changes, and employees can expect to pick up an ever-growing share, the Los Angeles Times reports. Human resources consultant Hewitt's survey of 350 medium to large firms found companies "will spend $9,821 per employee on average for insurance next year, up from $9,028 this year — an 8.8% increase and more than double what they paid in 2001."
The Liberal opposition has come up with dismal figures for the July-September period of 2009 related to inadequate emergency services, bed shortages and overflowing emergency departments. According to reports that they obtained under the Freedom of Information, only one in six hospitals had acceptable performance standard for ambulance cases.
Last night, the state of Missouri voted to pass Proposition C, also known as the "Health Care Freedom Act," barring governments from requiring people to have health insurance. The measure conflicts with a key provision of the new federal health care law that requires people to have health insurance or pay fines by 2014. The proposition is modeled after the American Legislative Exchange Council's Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act, which has now been introduced or announced in 42 states.
