Study finds tick bite meat allergy as most common cause of anaphylaxis

An increase in the Lone Star tick population since 2006, and the ability to recognize the ticks as the source of "alpha gal" allergy to red meat has meant significantly more cases of anaphylaxis being properly identified.

Researcher Stacy Sims, a research scientist and exercise physiologist at Stanford University School of Medicine presented her findings Tuesday at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism scientific sessions in San Diego. "If you think about adipose [fat] tissue, it's a great insulator," Sims said. For people who are obese, that means they often get too hot while exercising. "It would be like Lance Armstrong wearing a wet suit for the entire Tour de France," she said. "We're trying to address those barriers."

Brown, University of Cape Town partner to create next generation of HIV social science in South Africa

The public health schools at Brown University and the University of Cape Town have launched a new research and training partnership to create "the next generation of HIV social science in South Africa." The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development is funding the collaboration with a new $1.9 million, five-year grant.

Discovery of 350 genes related to female fertility

These discoveries might lead the way to eventually allowing clinicians to test whether an infertile woman has problems with a specific gene, allowing for improved diagnostic tests and tailored therapy in the future, said Dr. Castrillon, a specialist in the diagnosis of infertility and other diseases of women.
