An addiction to food may be replaced by an addiction to alcohol in certain bariatrics patients. According to a new study in the Journal of American Medical Association, having Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, where the size of the stomach and the intestine are decreased to reduce food consumption, can increase the risk of alcohol-use disorders.
Labels such as "European American", "white", or "Caucasian" are often viewed as representing a homogeneous category in gene mapping studies and census reports, but each of these labels actually groups together multiple populations, which have diverse origins due to the complex history of European immigration to the United States.
Caring for patients in an acute care setting in a hospital requires a team approach and involves a multitude of healthcare professionals including nurses, attending physicians, residents, case managers, pharmacists, and clinical psychologists to name a few. Each of these professions enters into practice with different skills sets, knowledge and professional identities that contribute to patient care. Yet, in many circumstances, barriers exist between disciplines that can obstruct a team-based system.
