A new study demonstrates that high levels of MAO-B, an enzyme that regulates nerve activity in the brain, cause Parkinson's-like symptoms in mice genetically engineered to overexpress the protein.
The Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) announced today it is accepting entries for the 11th annual Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Awards. The awards, named after FBR's late chairman, Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, honor professional journalists whose reporting has enhanced public understanding of how the humane and responsible use of animal models leads to medical and scientific discoveries.
Hemispherx Biopharma, Inc., announced its financial results for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2009. The net loss for the year (including non-cash charges) was approximately $13,438,000 or $0.12 per share as compared to a net loss of $12,219,000 or $0.16 per share in 2008.
Ketamine is a drug used to induce general anesthesia. It has also been found to act rapidly to relieve depression that has failed to respond to two other rounds of medication. A new study published in the journal Translational Psychiatry in May 2020 reports the mechanism of action of the drug, which was hitherto unknown. This could help find new ways to treat this debilitating and sometimes fatal condition.
