Malaysia's plans for its biotechnology sector remain ambitious even with the recent global meltdown. By 2020 the government envisages this sector will employ up to 160,000 people and will contribute to 5% of Malaysia's GDP.
"Nanomedicine is certainly the most promising enabling technology to achieve breakthroughs in medical technologies. It will strongly contribute to driving the future of medicine. A first step to initiate the necessary actions will be done in October in Barcelona." says Bertrand Loubaton, Director at GE Healthcare and chairman of the European Technology Platform ETPN.
Patients with confirmed episodes of consciousness during surgery have high rates of psychological problems including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), even several years after the incident, reports a study in the March issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, official journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society.
The side effects of cancer treatment mean patients often have to give up work, and may have to live on a low income; forcing many patients to make a choice between finding the money for travel to hospital and basic necessities such as food, children's clothes and household bills.
A gene so powerful it nearly triples the risk of Alzheimer's disease has been discovered by an international team including researchers from Mayo Clinic. It is the most potent genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's identified in the past 20 years. The findings were reported Wednesday in the online edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.
