Neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease are typically characterized by protein deposits in the brain. These are comprised of defective, insoluble proteins which no longer fulfill their function and which cells are unable to break down. The work group headed by Professor Christian Behl of the Institute of Pathobiochemistry of the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz has determined the RAB3GAP complex as a novel factor that influences the efficient degradation of proteins.
In a post in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's "Impatient Optimists" blog, Tom Scott, director of global brand and innovation at the foundation, and Gregory Adams, director of aid effectiveness at Oxfam, examine "why a new vision of aid is critical."
Verax Biomedical today announced that the company has gained FDA clearance to expand the use of its Verax Platelet PGD test—a rapid test for the detection of bacterial contamination in platelets intended for transfusion. The new FDA clearance makes the Verax Platelet PGD test the only rapid test on the market cleared by the FDA to check every commonly distributed platelet type in the United States.
