The drive toward containing health care costs could have the unintended consequence of reducing physician productivity, impairing quality and perhaps even increasing costs, two Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center physicians suggest in a New England Journal of Medicine "Perspective."
Clinical research studies are the reason medical care has improved leaps and bounds in the past few decades. Without these carefully-designed tests for new drugs, procedures or devices, treatments for diseases would not progress. These studies should be viewed as opportunities, although some people may view them negatively.
Anika Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that it has acquired Fidia Advanced Biopolymers, s.r.l. ("FAB"), a wholly-owned subsidiary of privately held Italian pharmaceutical company, Fidia Farmaceutici S.p.A. FAB provides hyaluronic acid-based ("HA") products in several therapeutic areas including for the regeneration of connective and structural tissues damaged by injuries, aging or degenerative diseases.
The European R&D project BrainAble, led by Barcelona Digital, has just successfully ended by developing a prototype that allows patients with severe functional disability to be more active and independent.
Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a common treatment option for patients with advanced stage prostate cancer. But nearly 80 percent of patients who receive ADT report experiencing hot flashes during and after treatment. Moffitt Cancer Center researchers are working to determine what genetic factors and other characteristics might make prostate cancer patients more likely to experience hot flashes during and after therapy.
