An international team of researchers tested a contact lens that may reduce the progress of nearsightedness, or myopia, by fully correcting the central vision but reducing the relative peripheral farsightedness, or hyperopia.
A new study published in the prestigious PLoS One journal changes our understanding of the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration. The researchers found that degenerative changes and loss of vision are caused by impaired function of the lysosomal clean-up mechanism, or autophagy, in the fundus of the eye.
Cryptococcus disease is a rare but serious infection resulting from inhaling a toxic fungus often found in fir trees. Approximately 250 people have been infected with the disease in British Columbia since its emergence in 1999. The disease can cause meningitis, pneumonia and in 10 per cent of cases it can lead to death.
The overhaul includes $1.7 trillion in new spending over the next decade - which is being eyed by members of Congress for various reasons. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times reports on a mental health coverage gap in the health law's effort to expand access to health care, and The Washington Post reports on how employer challenges to the law are taking shape.
