The WHO on Tuesday said it was "getting closer" to declaring the H1N1 (swine) flu outbreak to be a pandemic, as the virus continues to spread to people outside of North America, and in populations "as far apart as Britain, Spain, Japan, Chile and Australia," the AP/Washington Post reports (Jordans, AP/Washington Post, 6/2).
According to experts as many as half of all probiotic health drinks do not contain the healthy bacteria they claim on the label.
Co-authors Daria Khanolainen from the University of Jyväskylä and Elena Semenova from Kazan Federal University developed and piloted an innovative arts-based methodology for sensitive research. The method is called graphic vignettes, and it looks like a set of incomplete comic strips which participants complete in a creative way. The researchers have just published two articles about the new method.
Scientists have discovered over 30 new genes that predispose people to allergies and asthma, some of which could be targets for new drugs.
According to a new report published Thursday, 14 different pathogens causing food poisoning cost the United States $14 billion annually in terms of human disease. The report comes from the University of Florida Emerging Pathogens Institute that found that out of all the pathogen-food combinations they studied, campylobacter in poultry was the single worst offender, causing more than 600,000 illnesses per year, hospitalizing more than 7,000 people and costing, annually, $1.3 billion and 9,500 quality-of-life years.
