An experimental health information exchange being tested in the north Georgia city of Rome is helping Koren Sinnock keep her travel plans. A breast cancer patient, Sinnock had been reluctant to travel very far from her doctors until the new program promised to provide access to her medical records from anywhere she might happen to be - including the beach.
Americans recognize things need to change in the grocery aisle, and they support Uncle Sam's efforts to overhaul what is included in their food and on the packages. The majority also believe they are individually responsible for making the right food choices to avoid obesity, but will readily accept the government's help to be successful, according to a new survey by FoodMinds.
Nearly 20 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, a serious health condition that has been linked to increased risks for obesity and weight gain, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, asthma and depression. Sleep apnea has also been cited by experts as the number one cause of car accidents. Ninety-five percent of sleep apnea cases go undiagnosed, putting the health of millions of Americans at risk.
Many of those eligible for Medicaid before passage of the health law but not enrolled have signed up as a result of the publicity about getting insured, adding to states' costs.
New research led by American Cancer Society researchers in collaboration with the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Georgia State University used activity monitors to find that higher income individuals are more likely to be "weekend warriors," getting most of their activity on only a few days a week, and also spend more time in sedentary pursuits.
