Facet Solutions announces data from ACADIA lumbar stenosis pilot study

Facet Solutions, Inc. today announced that it has finished compiling two year data from its lumbar stenosis pilot study in the US. At two years, patients in the ACADIAâ„¢ study experienced significant and sustained improvement in Oswestry Disability Index, VAS back pain and VAS leg pain. There were no re-operations in any of the patients, and all patients met the definition of success for ODI improvement.

La Jolla Institute scientist finds protein key to insulin secretion

If you think of diabetes onset like an elaborate molecular drama, then a research team led by a La Jolla Institute scientist has unmasked a previously unknown cellular player, which is critical to proper insulin secretion. "Defective insulin secretion is a hallmark of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes," said Catherine Hedrick, Ph.D., a scientist at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology, who led the team, which included researchers from the University of Virginia.

USGS researchers examine PAHs and PCBs sources in urban environment

Toxic dust: Toxins in coal-tar-based sealcoats in parking lots may be the culprit in contaminated house dust, according to a USGS study. PAHs - or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - are large molecules found in oil, coal and tar deposits, and can have toxic effects.
