High dose peretinoin reduces recurrence of HCC after surgical resection or ablation in HCV positive patients

Kowa Company, Ltd. announced today that the results of a Phase II/III trial showed that high dose peretinoin (NIK-333) given daily for up to 96 weeks reduced the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after surgical resection or ablation in hepatitis C virus (HCV) positive patients when compared to placebo.

Multivariable analyses identify epidemiological risk factors for ovarian cancer

Concentrations of the biomarkers CA125, human epididymis protein 4 (HE4), and mesothelin began to rise 3 years before clinical diagnosis of ovarian cancer, according to a new study published online December 30 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. However, the biomarkers became substantially elevated only in the last year prior to diagnosis.

Study examines temporal association between media coverage and opioid-related deaths

Increases in deaths from opioid drugs such as OxyContin may be linked to the volume of coverage such deaths receive in the news, according to a study from Children's Hospital Boston and the University of North Carolina (UNC), Chapel Hill. The study compared patterns of opioid deaths and patterns of news coverage between 1999 and 2005, during which time mortality rates from opioid abuse doubled.
