KeyBank Foundation awards $1M grant for providing breast cancer education to medically underserved women

A $1 million grant from KeyBank Foundation to Susan G. Komen for the CureĀ® will fund a training and outreach program potentially reaching more than 100,000 medically underserved women in selected communities that KeyBank serves. The grant, announced today by Susan G. Komen for the Cure and KeyCorp, is the Foundation's largest-ever grant at the national level and will be used to establish the Susan G. Komen Lay Health Advisors Training Program.

Grassley inquiry into fast-tracking of Avastin drug applications could hurt cancer drug development, patients

Sen. Chuck Grassley's (R-Iowa) request that the Government Accountability Office investigate whether FDA acted appropriately in granting "accelerated approval" to a cancer drug "will have a catastrophic effect on America's ability to develop new drugs," Mark Thornton, a former medical officer in FDA's Office of Oncology Drug Products and president of the Sarcoma Foundation of America, writes in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.

New gene therapy approach safe for patients with muscular dystrophy

Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have shown that it is safe to cut and paste together different viruses in an effort to create the ultimate vehicle for gene therapy. In a phase I clinical trial, the investigators found no side effects from using a "chimeric" virus to deliver replacement genes for an essential muscle protein in patients with muscular dystrophy.

Research: New drugs show ability to rapidly shrink melanoma tumors

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, killing more than 8,000 in the U.S. each year. Approximately 40 percent of advanced melanoma tumors are driven to grow by the presence of mutations in a gene known as the BRAF gene.

Potential pact on medicare changes could lead to budget deal

The New York Times reports that a possible agreement between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans on "broad systemic changes to Medicare" could help spur a budget deal. And The Wall Street Journal reports the White House is weighing inclusion of some entitlement changes in its 2014 budget proposal as a way to prod further talks.
