New software tool for the visually impaired

To give navigational "sight" to the blind, Dr. Lahav has invented a new software tool to help the blind navigate through unfamiliar places. It is connected to an existing joystick, a 3-D haptic device, that interfaces with the user through the sense of touch.

Rwandan health ministry campaign promotes vasectomy for family planning

"Rwanda's health ministry has launched a campaign encouraging men to undergo vasectomies, in an effort to curb population growth in Africa's most densely populated country," Reuters reports. The government says to compete with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, the country's economy must continue to grow at an average seven to eight percent per year, and to do so, "the birth rate must be below three children per family," according to the news agency.

VTT develops miniature gas sensor for mobile devices to detect internal air problems

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has developed a miniature gas sensor that can be connected to mobile devices. Gas measurements made with smartphones will make activities such as the detection of internal air problems easier. In addition, sleep quality will be measurable with greater precision, using mobile healthcare applications which gauge carbon dioxide quantities.

Study suggests more sensitive screening methods to improve CRC detection rates

One in four cases of colorectal cancer detected in a guiac faecal occult blood testing programme are diagnosed within two years of a negative screening result, a study in the UEG Journal has found, suggesting that gFOBT should be replaced by more sensitive screening methods to improve detection rates.
