Stiffer penalties for assaulting nurses, health care workers: Massachusetts House passes legislation

The Massachusetts House of Representatives cast a unanimous vote today to pass legislation which will stiffen the penalties of those who assault nurses and other health care workers, one of a series of measures the state's nurses are proposing to address the growing problem of workplace violence in health care settings.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center receives $90M in new financial support from Ludwig

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, along with five other elite academic institutions, will share an unprecedented total of $540 million in new financial support from Ludwig Cancer Research, on behalf of its founder Daniel K. Ludwig. Announced today, the gift is among the largest publicly recorded gifts to cancer research made by a private organization, bringing the total funding to date for Ludwig Centers and endowed professorships at the six institutions to $900 million.

Governors worry about major Medicaid expansion

The GOP fears the burden of a health care overhaul on states, Roll Call reports: "Senate Republicans joined with GOP governors on Thursday and harshly criticized Finance Chairman Max Baucus' (D-Mont.) health care plan, charging the bill would expand Medicaid while forcing a massive unfunded mandate on cash-strapped states. Republicans have criticized the bill for using the Medicaid system, which is partially funded by states and partially by the federal government, as a way to ensure greater health care coverage for Americans" (Stanton, 9/17).
