Propofol is a safe and effective drug to treat children with refractory status epilepticus

One-third of patients hospitalized on weekends receive needed major procedures on day of admission

Of the 8 million patients who were admitted to U.S. hospitals on weekends in 2007, approximately one-third received needed major procedures on the day of admission, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. In comparison, patients who were admitted on weekdays received 65 percent of all major procedures on their first day in the hospital.

Condoms can prevent transmission of herpes simplex virus 2: Study

Condom use is associated with a reduced risk of contracting herpes simplex virus 2, according to a report based on pooled analysis of data from previous studies in the July 13 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Despite health reform efforts, Milwaukee clinic for low-income patients may close

A clinic in a low-income Milwaukee neighborhood has filled a need for 23 years, but people running it worry that it may not be helped by any changes to the health care system. The New York Times reports on the Milwaukee Immediate Care Center, a small nonprofit clinic, "which keeps hours at night and on weekends, [and] is the only full-time operation in the neighborhood that provides urgent care, luring patients with a sign that reads, 'When You Need a Doctor Today.'"

Belatacept Biologics License Application: FDA drug advisory committee recommends approval

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee has voted 13 to 5 to recommend approval of belatacept, a selective co-stimulation blocker, for the prophylaxis of acute rejection in de novo kidney transplant patients.
