Broken heart syndrome may protect the heart from adrenaline overload

A condition that temporarily causes heart failure in people who experience severe stress might actually protect the heart from very high levels of adrenaline, according to a new study published in the journal Circulation. The research provides the first physiological explanation for Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also called "broken heart syndrome" because it affects people who suffer severe emotional stress after bereavement, and suggests guidance for treatment.

Multiple cell and gene therapies can enhance cardiac function in mice modeled with MI

Researchers at the University of Utah compared the therapeutic potential of umbilical cord-derived sub-epithelial cells (UC-SECs), bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) - all derived from human tissue - along with genes (S100a1 and SDF-1a) and growth factor (VEGF165) to evaluate how injected biologics might enhance cardiac function in mice modeled with myocardial infarction (MI; commonly referred to as heart attack).

Mylan Pharmaceuticals launches Repaglinide Tablets, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg

Mylan Inc. today announced that its U.S.-based subsidiary Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. has launched Repaglinide Tablets, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg. This product is the generic version of Novo Nordisk's Prandin, which is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Analysis finds racial and ethnic disparities in the odds of testing positive for COVID-19

An analysis of Kaiser Permanente members in Northern California early in the COVID-19 pandemic found racial and ethnic disparities in the likelihood of testing positive for the coronavirus, but no significant disparities in mortality among those who were hospitalized.

Less invasive surgery effective in treatment of reflux disease

Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery to treat severe reflux disease was effective in relieving symptoms and was associated with high rates of patient satisfaction five years after the procedure, according to a study in the October issue of Archives of Surgery.
