Melanocyte-like cells in heart and pulmonary veins contribute to atrial fibrillation

The source and mechanisms underlying the abnormal heart beats that initiate atrial fibrillation (Afib), the most common type of abnormal heart beat, have not been well determined. However, a group of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, has now identified a population of cells that are like pigment producing cells in the skin (melanocytes) in the atria of the heart and pulmonary veins of mice and humans and uncovered evidence in mice that these cells contribute to Afib.

Skin cancer rates going down in Alberta: Research group

This comes at a time when American scientists say that skin cancer rates are on the rise.

NIH awards Phase I SBIR grant to develop Generic Antibodies for cancer

Rockland Immunochemicals Inc., a biotechnology company focusing on antibodies and antibody based tools for basic research, diagnostic assay development and preclinical studies, today announced that it has received a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop Generic Antibodies "Biosimilars" for the Treatment of Cancer.
