Natural environments promote healthy aging in seniors

Natural environments are known to promote physical, mental, and spiritual healing. People can attain health benefits by spending time outside, often in remote places to "get away from it all." Now research conducted by a University of Minnesota graduate student with a team in Vancouver, B.C., shows that green and "blue" spaces (environments with running or still water) are especially beneficial for healthy aging in seniors.

Researchers find daycare increases chronic lung disease in children

Exposure to common viruses in daycare puts children with a chronic lung condition caused by premature birth at risk for serious respiratory infections, according to a study from Johns Hopkins Children's Center published in the October issue of Pediatrics.

New York Hospital Queens opens new 190,000 square feet 'West Wing'

New York Hospital Queens invites the news media to tour its newly opened West Wing. The opening of the new building marks a major milestone for the hospital, for physicians and patients in Queens. The new seven-floor building, known as the "West Wing," has 190,000 square feet, and adds 80 certified patient beds, bringing the hospital's total to 519.

Sleep apnea is a risk factor for developing diabetic macular edema, study shows

New research from Taiwan shows that severe sleep apnea is a risk factor for developing diabetic macular edema, a complication of diabetes that can cause vision loss or blindness. Diabetic macular edema was also more difficult to treat in patients with severe sleep apnea.
