Capsule endoscopy could identify presence of "occult" blood at very low levels

A tiny capsule that can carry out a chemical analysis of the contents of one's stomach could identify the presence of so-called "occult" blood at very low levels. The data is automatically broadcast to an external monitoring device for detection of early stage stomach cancer by one's physician. Details of the invention and initial trials are described in a forthcoming issue of the International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Technology.

GSK, Theravance announce availability of Anoro Ellipta in the US for COPD treatment

GlaxoSmithKline plc and Theravance, Inc. today announced that Anoro Ellipta (umeclidinium and vilanterol inhalation powder), the first once-daily product approved in the US that combines two long-acting bronchodilators in a single inhaler for the maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is now available to retail pharmacies in the US.

PMI releases 6-year malaria strategy

The U.S. government Thursday released a six-year strategy to address malaria globally, Reuters reports (Fox, 4/22). The plan was issued through the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) in conjunction with World Malaria Day, April 25, and is a "core component of President [Barack] Obama's Global Health Initiative," according to a USAID press release (4/22).

Australian biomedical scientists tackle malaria with on-line malaria information resource

Endemic in 101 countries, malaria affects an estimated 200-300 million people per year resulting in over 2 million deaths the majority of these being children. The World Health Organisation have calculated that a child under 5 years of age dies from malaria every 30 seconds. In simplistic terms, three factors have been identified as major reasons for these fatalities.

People with the most common type of lung cancer whose disease has spread to the brain could be spared potentially harmful whole brain radiotherapy, according to new research published in The Lancet.
