For adult patients with brainstem high-grade gliomas - one of the rarest and deadliest forms of brain cancer - surgically removing the entire tumor may add many months or potentially years of survival beyond that offered by radiation and chemotherapy, according to results of a medical records study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.
Using mathematical concepts, Princeton researchers have developed a method of discovering new drugs for a range of diseases by calculating which physical properties of biological molecules may predict their effectiveness as medicines.
ARUP Laboratories, a leading national clinical and anatomic pathology reference laboratory and a leader in innovative laboratory research and development, today announced it is offering the Septin 9 methylated DNA test, a new blood-based colorectal cancer screening method. While ARUP is not the first laboratory to offer this test, this new version, developed and validated independently by ARUP, is clinically proven to detect a higher proportion of colorectal cancers than Septin 9 tests developed by other companies.
Scientists at the University of Washington and their colleagues at other research centers have found a way to significantly extend the lifespan of mice while reducing the impact of the aging process. Their study, which will be published online by the journal Science on May 5, lends more credence to the free-radical theory of aging.
Study conducted as part of blood pressure-measuring campaign MMM18 shows that that one in three people with hypertension don't monitor it (35.5%), and one in five don't follow any sort of treatment (19%).
