The Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine has established the Distinguished Scientist Award to recognize biomedical scientists whose seminal research accomplishments have established them as leaders in biomedicine, and who have made significant contributions to SEBM.
Researchers have discovered that deletion of a specific gene permits the proliferation of new hair cells in the cochlea of the inner ear - a finding that offers promise for treatment of age-related hearing loss. This type of hearing loss is caused by aging, disease, certain drugs, and the cacophony of modern life. It is the most common cause of hearing loss in older people.
The estimated 10 percent of women in Western nations who enter menopause before age 45 have an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as lower fertility. Now epidemiologist Elizabeth Bertone-Johnson at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is conducting the first large study to investigate whether vitamin D deficiency, inflammatory factors, hormones and other factors are associated with risk of early menopause, funded by NIH.
