Kinetic Concepts, Inc. today announced an agreement with Novation, one of the health care industry's largest supply contracting companies, to renew its existing single-source contracts with KCI's Therapeutic Support Systems business through the end of 2013. Through Novation, KCI provides access to its innovative hospital beds, mattress replacement systems, overlays and bariatric products to more than 30,500 health care institutions across the U.S.
Scientists funded by the National Institutes of Health have identified a gene associated with narcolepsy, a disorder that causes disabling daytime sleepiness, sleep attacks, irresistible bouts of sleep that can strike at any time, and disturbed sleep at night. The gene has a known role in the immune system, which strongly suggests that autoimmunity, in which the immune system turns against the body's own tissues, plays an important role in the disorder.
A multi-institution study led by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has found that increasing the number of insured patients is not associated with higher intensive care unit (ICU) usage in Massachusetts.
