New strain of mice to study nicotine addiction

A team of investigators supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institutes of Health, has created a strain of mice scientists can use to study nicotine addiction and its associated behaviors.

Phase 1 clinical trial of OXY111A initiated

NormOxys Inc., a biotechnology company developing a novel class of small molecule drugs which enhance the body's ability to deliver oxygen to diseased tissues, today announced that it has initiated a Phase 1 clinical trial of OXY111A, a novel allosteric modulator of affinity of oxygen to hemoglobin. NormOxys plans to initially develop this compound as a treatment for chronic heart failure and cancer indications.

Study demonstrates impact of epilepsy on child and parent sleep patterns

Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital for Children in Boston have determined that pediatric epilepsy significantly impacts sleep patterns for the child and parents. According to the study available in Epilepsia, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), sharing a room or co-sleeping with their child with epilepsy decreases the sleep quality and prevents restful sleep for parents.

FDA grants orphan drug designation for ICT-107

ImmunoCellular Therapeutics announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted orphan drug designation for ICT-107, the company's dendritic cell-based cancer vaccine candidate which targets glioblastoma multiforme. As a result of the orphan drug status, ImmunoCellular will be eligible to receive a number of benefits, including access to grant funding for clinical trials, tax credits, accelerated FDA approval and allowance for marketing exclusivity after drug approval for a period of up to seven years.
