Contact precautions are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for all patients known to be infected with or carrying multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). Yet, the use of contact precautions-which require a patient to be isolated in a single hospital room and health care providers to wear a gown and gloves when caring for patients-is widely debated in the medical community.
Santarus, Inc. and Depomed, Inc. today announced that they have entered into a new commercialization agreement for GLUMETZA (metformin hydrochloride extended release tablets) under which Santarus will assume broad commercial, manufacturing and regulatory responsibilities to replace a promotion agreement that the companies entered into in July 2008.
Scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University have received a five-year, $10.8 million grant to develop stem cell-based therapies that could be used to mitigate radiation-induced gastrointestinal syndrome - part of acute radiation syndrome (ARS) - for military personnel, first responders and the general public. The Einstein research, funded by the federal Centers for Medical Countermeasures Against Radiation, is part of a program coordinated by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
