The Wilson Center's Synthetic Biology project recently received two grants from the National Science Foundation. One will support a Transatlantic Exploratory Workshop on the Implications of Cutting-Edge Biotechnologies for Sustainability Science and Policy, and the other will support research on the use of on-line prediction markets to explore emerging issues in synthetic biology.
Liberator Medical Holdings, Inc. announced net revenues for fiscal year 2009 of $25,818,000, representing an increase of $16,268,000, or 170.3%, compared with fiscal year 2008. The increase in sales occurred in the mail order segment of its business. The increase was due to a substantial direct-response advertising campaign to obtain new mail order customers.
A new analysis indicates that many cancer survivors change their prescription drug use (including skipping doses or requesting cheaper medications) for financial reasons.
An interesting new study describes the activities of a family of viral enzymes called two-histidine-phosphoesterases (2H-PEs), found in coronaviruses (CoVs) and rotaviruses, as well as a mammalian A-kinase anchoring protein enzyme, AKAP7, that shares the same function. Together called 2',5'-PEs, these enzymes all break down 2',5'-oligoadenylate compounds that activate the antiviral enzyme ribonuclease L (RNase L).
John L. Johnson, M.D., Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and pulmonologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center has been awarded a 10 year, $19.7M contract from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an international clinical trials site for the Tuberculosis Trials Consortium (TBTC).
