STERIS Corporation today announced financial results for its fiscal 2011 first quarter ended June 30, 2010. During the first quarter, the Company recorded the previously announced liability related to the SYSTEM 1 Rebate Program. Of the $110 million pre-tax amount recorded, $102 million is attributable to the Customer Rebate portion of the Program and was recorded as a reduction of revenues, and $8 million is attributable to the disposal of the SYSTEM 1 units to be returned and was recorded as an increase in cost of revenues.
Los Angeles Times: Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius "called on Anthem Blue Cross on Monday to justify its controversial new rate hikes of as much as 39% for individual policyholders." Sebelius "voiced concerns" in a letter to Anthem's president. The new rates "go into effect March 1 for many of the insurer's estimated 800,000 individual policyholders" (Helfand, 2/8).
A study led by researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center- Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute has identified a biochemical pathway in cancer stem cells that is essential for promoting head and neck cancer.
By coordinating with state health departments and communicating with each other about patients with C. difficile and antibiotic-resistant infections, hospitals, long-term acute-care facilities and nursing homes could reduce the number of such hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) by an estimated 619,000 cases in the next five years, a new Centers for Disease Control 9 (CDC)-led report has found.
