A UCSF-led team has discovered at least one key reason why blood stem cells are susceptible to developing the genetic mutations that can lead to adult leukemia. Their finding also may explain, they say, why some other age-related hematological disorders develop. The study, reported in "Cell Stem Cell" and reviewed in Cell Stem Cell and Cell, opens a new frontier for studying the molecular underpinnings of adult leukemia.
Topical retinoids, which target retinoic acid receptors, are commonly used to treat acne. New research published in theBritish Journal of Dermatologyreveals that trifarotene, a fourth-generation retinoid with potent and selective activity against only one particular retinoic acid receptor, may have an improved efficacy and safety profile compared with less selective retinoids.
Repligen Corporation reported today that it has completed patient treatment in its Phase 3 clinical trial of RG1068, synthetic human secretin, in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pancreas. The study is designed to assess the sensitivity and specificity of RG1068 in conjunction with MRI for the detection of pancreatic duct abnormalities compared to MRI alone.
As we seek a better understanding of the workings of the human mind, we are continually confronted by fresh ethical, legal, and social questions. Now, researchers are increasingly emphasizing the role of a new discipline, neuroethics, to guide the search for answers to those questions. This will become even more important as we embark upon an envisioned "Decade of the Mind" in 2010, a multidisciplinary effort dedicated to understanding the phenomenon of mind within the context of neuroscience.
