Secondhand smoke exposure during pregnancy causes permanent genetic damage in newborns

Newborns of non-smoking moms exposed to secondhand smoke during pregnancy have genetic mutations that may affect long-term health, according to a University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health study published online in the Open Pediatric Medicine Journal. The abnormalities, which were indistinguishable from those found in newborns of mothers who were active smokers, may affect survival, birth weight and lifelong susceptibility to diseases like cancer.

Surveillance machinery in cells recognizes and destroys defective genetic material, research shows

New research out of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine describes a mechanism by which an essential quality control system in cells identifies and destroys faulty genetic material. The findings were published online December 23 in Nature Communications.

HHS makes funds available for health insurance co-ops

The Department of Health and Human Services will make available $600 million in loans to help start these co-ops, which were authorized by the health law. Meanwhile, various regulations regarding the health law's coverage expansions are pending at the Office of Management and Budget.

World's first Cesium-131 lung implants performed

IsoRay, Inc. announced today that starting on August 12, 2009, Dr. Bhupesh Parashar from the Department of Radiation Oncology, and Dr. Nasser Altorki of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical Center performed the world's first Cesium-131 lung implants.
