National Alliance for Hispanic Health commends passage of health care bill

"Tonight the U.S. House of Representatives showed they have heard the voice of America's families by passing the Affordable Health Care for America Act. Now the Senate must deliver, without delay, on the promise of meaningful health care reform," said Dr. Jane L. Delgado, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, the nation's leading Hispanic health advocacy group.

Health workers' misdeeds kept in secret database

NPR: "Twenty-two years ago, the federal government started keeping a list of nurses, nurse aides, pharmacists and pharmacy aides who've been disciplined by state licensing boards. It's called the Healthcare Integrity and Protection Data Bank. But hospitals and nursing homes aren't allowed to see the database." The database was intended to be "open to hospitals and nursing homes when they hire staff and want to run a background check.

Ore. hospitals with most clout command higher prices

The (Portland) Oregonian: Prices vary radically for similar procedures at Oregon hospitals. "A balloon angioplasty to unclog heart arteries costs about $52,000 at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, more than three times the typical amount insurers paid Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, according to hospital payment comparisons posted online today by Oregon health officials."

Nurse creates a self-management tool for patients with left ventricular assist device

In the early 90s, Dr. Jessie Casida was one of few nurses working on the first patient with a left ventricular assist device-;a battery-powered device that pumps blood, surgically implanted into the heart of patients who have end-stage heart failure.
