UVA researchers develop a noninvasive surgical approach to remove faulty brain circuits

University of Virginia School of Medicine researchers have developed a noninvasive way to remove faulty brain circuits that could allow doctors to treat debilitating neurological diseases without the need for conventional brain surgery.

Airway inflammation linked with asthma-related mortality rates in older adults

Higher mortality rates among older adult asthma patients compared to their younger counterparts may be due, at least in part, to an increase in airway inflammation, according to a study conducted by researchers in Canada, who note that their results imply that elderly patients are either less likely to follow asthma medication dosing instructions, or that the underlying airway inflammation in elderly patients is relatively resistant to current anti-inflammatory therapies.

FDA grants Haemonetics clearance to collect two RBC on Cymbal system

On January 27, 2010 the FDA cleared the Haemonetics 510(k) for its expanded nomogram to collect two Red Blood Cells on the Cymbal® Automated Blood Collection System from female donors who are at least 150 pounds and are 63 inches in height. The Cymbal is a small, portable, battery operated instrument that automates blood collection from volunteer donors, improving process control and helping alleviate blood shortages.

"Women in Afghanistan are 70 times more likely to die in childbirth than from a bullet or a bomb, according to Save the Children," CNN reports, adding that is "a grim statistic the women here are trying to change."
