Green Cross' Biologics License Application for IVIG-SN submitted to FDA

Green Cross Corporation, a South Korean biopharmaceutical company, today announced that it has submitted its Biologics License Application for IVIG-SN (human normal immunoglobulin G for intravenous administration) to the United States Food and Drug Administration.

Risks of obesity in children with kidney transplants

Obese children who get kidney transplants tend to be younger, shorter and on dialysis longer than their leaner peers, according to a study in the February issue of the journal Pediatrics.

Some imaging centers, drug makers may be driving up costs

The Dallas Morning News reports on the lure of the medical imaging business, which is many say is a "growth industry," including the idea that a "second- or third-hand MRI machine" can be purchased by a physician practice or free-standing imaging center for a few hundred thousand dollars but yield millions in new revenue. A report by America's Health Insurance Plans says as many as half the scans are unnecessary, and a McKinsey Global Institute study found the extra machines produce around $26.4 billion in additional costs each year. In addition, they expose patients to avoidable radiation (McNeill, 9/22).

Bayer's gadobutrol injection for CNS imaging receives FDA Advisory Committee approval

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced today that the Peripheral and Central Nervous System Drugs Advisory Committee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration voted unanimously that clinical trial and postmarketing data for gadobutrol injection, a macrocyclic 1.0 molar gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA), support approval of the product for proposed use in diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in adults and children.
