Genome-wide study identifies key genetic variant associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital found that patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) who carry an allele of the PNPLA3 gene have an increased risk of developing advanced disease, including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, and cirrhosis. A second study supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) validates these findings and further concludes that in pediatric patients, the same allele is associated with earlier disease presentation.

Emdeon expands healthcare payment integrity solutions with TC3 acquisition

TearScience completes $44.5 million Series C funding

TearScience, a privately-held medical device company, today announced the completion of $44.5 million of Series C funding from new investors Essex Woodlands Health Ventures, Investor Growth Capital and General Catalyst. The company's existing investors, De Novo Ventures, Spray Ventures and Quaker Bio Ventures completed the round. The funding will allow TearScience to commercialize its devices designed for use by eye care professionals to diagnose and treat the most common form of chronic dry eye disease.

Targeting particular signaling pathway can help prevent temporal lobe epilepsy, scientists report

Temporal lobe epilepsy, the most common form of epilepsy, is characterized by recurrent seizures throughout life and often behavioral abnormalities, with devastating impacts on patients and their families. Unfortunately, the condition is often not responsive to anticonvulsants. Now scientists report online June 20 in the Cell Press journal Neuron that targeting a particular signaling pathway in mice can prevent the development of temporal lobe epilepsy with just two weeks of treatment, offering hope that researchers will be able to develop effective drugs to mitigate recurrent seizures and the development of epilepsy.
